Karmen
Geï (2001)
8:00pm Wednesday, March 4, 2020
In
honor of Tampa’s Pride month, the Tampa
Bay International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (TIGLFF) again
this year to present a special one-night-only screening of
Karmen Geï (2001), a contemporary Senegalese retelling
of the late 19th-century French opera, Carmen.
The story centers around the lusty, impulsive Karmen (Djeinaba
Diop Gai), an inmate of a woman’s prison who ignites the passions
of the female warden. But are Karmen’s feelings real or just
a ploy to escape her captor? The film explores the power dynamics
between these women, while addressing the politics and gender
roles in Senegal – all to the rhythms of an Afro-jazz score.
Underseen by both mainstream and art-house audiences, Karmen
Geï is about the conflict between infinite desire for freedom
and the laws, conventions, languages, and human limitations
which constrain that desire.
