Most year-end lists are a cause for celebration and looking back with fondness. This one isn’t.

These are the people, places and things that were most influential on the LGBTQ community in 2017 — but in the worst of ways.

It was a year that began with Donald Trump’s (embarrassingly under-attended) inauguration, and we’d say everything was full-force on a downward spiral from there. But the horribleness of 2017 — specifically as it relates to LGBTQ people — wasn’t restricted to America, by any means.

2017 was a terrible, horrible, no good year for the LGBTQ community, and the below are 10 reasons why.

  • Caitlyn Jenner - The trans community was nothing more than a prop intended to help her relive her glory days on Wheaties boxes.
  • Gay Trump Supporters - Conservatives are embracing gay Trump supporters as pariahs. Doing so leads them to cite queer people’s support as proof their policies are not actually homophobic or transphobic (when, really, they are).
  • Kevin Spacey - Kevin Spacey finally did what Hollywood insiders and much of the LGBTQ community had wanted him to do for decades — he came out as a gay man. But, instead of being lauded for his strength of character, Spacey was reviled, and rightly so.
  • Chechnya - Beginning in February 2017, it has been reported that more than 100 male residents had been abducted, held prisoner and tortured by authorities targeting them based on their perceived sexual orientation.
