psychiatric patient Kevin Haggerty is not pleased about his
diagnosis, even less pleased about being detained in hospital
and distinctly upset about being told he is not the reincarnation
of an Egyptian pharaoh. On his way to Egypt, via the 7-11, he
stumbles across the nemesis to all his plans: Millie - a lost
but exuberant six year old. Together they embark on a journey
that will change both their lives forever.
Kevin, King of Egypt is is the new show from UK stand
up poet Rob Gee. Rob spent 12 years working as a registered
psychiatric nurse around the UK and Australia before becoming
a full-time writer and performer. Working mainly in acute psychiatry,
he has also worked in child and adolescent units, drug and alcohol
services, eating disorders, early psychosis intervention and
psychiatric intensive care.
Kevin, the show’s central character, has a diagnosis of bipolar
illness. Rob explains: “When I first wrote the show I ran it
past several ex-patients, people that I used to nurse. I couldn’t
have done it without them. It was good to catch up and reminisce
about old times!” Now the National Health Service in the UK
have enlisted Rob to incorporate the show into a training session
for clinical staff. Rob says: "So audiences of nurses, clinicians
and managers see the show and then I lead discussions in how
they could have responded to various events in the plot."
