The
Sack will triumphantly return to Tampa this May
From
Jordan Bertke and Airtight Theatre who brought
you The Friendzone, Blind Double Date, and The
Sack: A Play on Superheroes, comes The Sack-quel: Sponsored
Superhero. This is the world premiere of Bertke’s superhero
sequel following successful runs of The Sack at the 2023 Orlando
Fringe Winter Mini Fest, 2021 Tampa Fringe, and 2021 Orlando
Fringe where the production was awarded the Critic’s Choice
Award for “Best Solo Show, Comedy.” Following The Sack-quel,
Bertke will perform The Sack once more in the debut of Sarasota’s
Squeaky Wheel Fringe in June.
The Sack is a one man show where Jordan Bertke portrays over
15 characters and tells the story of Spyn Isaac and his rise
as a superhero known as The Sack. Overworked and underappreciated,
Spyn learned that he had the power to redirect projectiles and
donned an ordinary sack to fight crime. Spyn’s crime fighting
put him at odds with the sinister Dr. Anonymous, who turned
out to be Spyn’s boss Charles B. Sack. Spyn managed to defeat
Anonymous, but decided to spare his life. Spyn’s brother Isaiah,
the mayor of their home Mega City, decided to create a city
position for The Sack so that he could fight crime for pay.
The Sack-quel picks up where the first installment left off.
Bertke has added fun new characters to the roster and brought
back fan favorites with expanded roles. Spyn is now a paid crime
fighter, but is learning that even a dream job like being a
superhero has its challenges. Dr. Anonymous is still a threat
behind bars leading Spyn to question why superheroes don’t kill
people. On top of that, a dangerous new rival has taken inspiration
from The Sack and threatens The Sack’s role in Mega City.
The Sack series is inspired by and parodies various media, superhero
and otherwise, including Daredevil, Batman, Spider-Man, James
Bond, and The Legend of Korra. The Sack-quel is best suited
for audiences 13 years and older due to language and
description of violence. The Sack-quel will be performed during
the Tampa International Fringe Festival at the Screendoor Venue
located within the historic Kress building in Ybor City.
